Turtle Nesting at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge
The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is home to the endangered leatherback sea turtles. The 340-acre habitat protects these turtles as they come here to nest. If you don’t already know, the leatherback sea turtle is the largest sea turtles in the world. These turtles can weigh between 550 and 2,000 pounds and get up to six feet long.
During the summer months, visitors can participate in the Turtle Watch Programs. The Nesting Watch lasts from April until June. The Hatchling Watch goes from June until the end of July. Reservations are only accepted for groups with at least 15 and no more than 30 people. No individual reservations are allowed. Great care is taken by the program coordinator and the research team to minimize any disturbance to the turtles.
Jump Up in St. Croix
What’s NOT to do at Jump Up in St. Croix? Once started as a local economy booster, now Jump Up is a premier St. Croix event that takes place four times a year in February, May, July, and November. The remaining 2019 dates for Jump Up are Friday, July 12 and Friday, November 22. Visitors and locals alike can enjoy music, dancing, food, drinks, street vendors, shopping, and lots of culture.
Jump Up features so many activities and attractions that the streets, boardwalk, and local business are filled with event-goers. Many of the retail stores offer extended hours. You can also marvel at the street-dancers, stilt-walkers, fire-eaters, and all sorts of spectacles.
Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival
If you are into tropical fruits, then you will love the 23rd annual Mango Melee, a popular summer event that brings awareness to all the tropical fruits St. Croix has to offer. The festival, which takes place on Sunday, July 7, features educational workshops, delicious food & drinks, cooking contests featuring — you guessed — mangoes, tropical fruit demonstrations, eating contests, vendors, and plenty of entertainment.
You can enjoy cultural dance performances, music, and the mango nursery, where you can tour the facility. The Garden’s Museum is open to all during the festival. Oh, and don’t forget the moko jumbies walking around. A silent auction closes out the one-day event. You will definitely get your share of mangoes.
St. Croix Reef Jam
Are you a fan of local entertainment? Then come out to the St. Croix Reef Jam in September 2019 (official date pending). This summer event features live local music, marine games, demonstrations, and even a snorkel clinic. You can take some local food and drinks, and grab a t-shirt on your way out. There’s even a Reef Rap, where local high school students battle it out for rap honors.
Guest speakers are invited to provide education and insight into the reef. Best of all, it is a great way to spend an afternoon relaxing and enjoying the beach. The event has taught over 1,000 children to snorkel and has made strides in teaching local residents and vendors to be more responsible as they spend time in and around the water.
