5 St. Croix Hotspots You Shouldn’t Miss

Daydreaming of crystal-clear water, warm white sand, and sunshine? You’re in luck! The gorgeous island of St. Croix is only a short flight away!

St. Croix is the largest of the three US Virgin Islands, so there’s certainly no shortage of activities. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach or if you prefer to indulge your adventurous side, St. Croix has it all. While it was hard to weed out the best of the bunch, your friends at Mango Hill Greathouse have uncovered the top 5 hotspots for your visit to St. Croix. Let’s begin!

Sunrise at Point Udall

Want to feel like you’re on the edge of the world? Take the scenic drive to the far eastern end of the island to Point Udall, and view one of the most breathtaking sunrises you’ll ever see. It’s also the easternmost point of land in the United States, so you’ll be one of the first people to view the peaceful morning sunrise. Take advantage of the photo op at the monument with endless views down the coastline. If you want to get some exercise, take a hike down to the beach below and go for a swim. (Make sure to pack some water and snacks and stop for a bathroom break before driving up there, as there are no facilities at Point Udall.)

Cruzan Rum Distillery

The Cruzan Rum Distillery is a must-see for rum lovers. Walk alongside tour guides as they explain the history of rum-making creations. You’ll experience all stages of the distilling process and view rows upon rows of rum barrels stacked up to the ceiling. At the end of the tour, you’ll get to try several of their most popular cocktails, saving the best for last!

The Cruzan Rum Distillery are opened from 9:00 AM to – 4:00 PM on Monday through Friday and 10:00 to 2:00 PM on Saturdays. **Wait for it – the best part – the entire tour only costs only $5.00!

Protestant Cay

Alright adventure seekers, this one’s for you! Take a short, two-minute ferry ride to a small island near downtown Christiansted, Protestant Cay. Step off the ferry and you’ll find a watersport center offering parasailing, jet-ski rentals, windsurfing, and snorkeling! There’s also a hotel nearby with a restaurant, bar and plenty of lounge chairs on the beach for top-notch relaxation. The water is shallow, warm and refreshing, making it the perfect spot for families with kids.

Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge

If you’re visiting St. Croix between October and March, this beach is a must see! Miles of sugary sand and turquoise water will have you drifting off into a dreamland. Better yet, grab some Cruzan Rum, water, snacks, sunscreen and an umbrella for shade, and you’re all set for a perfect beach day. (Keep in mind that the summer months are turtle nesting season, so the beach will be closed to the public between April and August.) Aside from turtles, the beach is also a habitat for more than 100 species of birds, so keep your eyes peeled for brown pelicans and yellow warblers. If you’re a movie buff, be sure to check out the beach at the end of the Refuge, where the final scene in The Shawshank Redemption was filmed!

*Note: Since Sandy Point is a nesting habitat for the leatherback sea turtle, the beach is only open on the weekends from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Fort Christiansvaern

History buffs, we have the spot for you! Fort Christiansvaern dates back to the mid-1700’s and was built to protect the town of Christiansted from smugglers, invaders, and pirates. You’ll have the option to take a self-guided tour or a guided tour to enhance your historical experience. Stepping inside, you’ll walk through a dungeon, latrine and many other spectacular spaces the fort has to offer. Outside, you’ll also get to experience some incredible panoramic views of the bay.
