If you choose to cook the kitchen doesn’t miss a trick, but if you just want to be lazy, St. Croix is now a “foodie” island with awesome restaurants (Balter and Zion Kitchen to name just two)serving farm to table and sea to table. And for pure luxury we indulged in poolside massages and a couple of fun yoga classes. Colette, Mango Hill’s dedicated concierge, is always so wonderfully helpful, and the whole staff at the house is just terrific. Golf and sandy beach are just down the road for those of our group who could tear themselves away from the pool and rum punches. We have been visiting Mango Hill for six years and it never disappoints – it actually gets better with every visit – the owners have just acquired a stunning collection of Cuban art now hanging throughout the house. Can’t wait to go back next January to celebrate my husband’s big birthday (not telling which one) in our favorite island home away from home. (One of those paintings may be “his” present!)
This house is such a perfect spot for different age groups to blend in and there is something every day for all to do. Everyone enjoyed tennis at the Buccaneer, golf on a fun 18-hole course just down the hill, snorkeling and scuba diving with a chartered boat off Buck Island — and most of all just relaxing in the sun poolside or at the nearby beach. St. Croix is definitely a foodie Island with lots of great restaurants like Balter and Zion Home Kitchen, and a fun night life. One night we hired Lori, a private chef, who provided us with a fabulous lobster dinner served on the glorious veranda that has an over the top view. Mango Hill is definitely for people looking for a luxury vacation yet a laidback (not overdeveloped like so many others) experience with fabulous amenities. The house is beautifully decorated with a lot cool art from Cuba that was very much admired by us all. And every member of the staff was extraordinarily helpful and charming! We can’t wait for our next visit.
A sumptuous seated dinner following for 12 close friends was done by a local chef in house and served by his excellent staff. The food, the wines!!! Everything was such perfection that we decided to stay on at Mango Hill with our wedding party for the honeymoon – I mean why go somewhere else when you’re already in a gorgeous, plantation-style house, with ALL the amenities. Naturally, we returned for our 5th anniversary…maybe go for vow renewal at 10th??
The plantation-style house and guesthouse, with large French doors everywhere opening to porches and verandas, makes one feel like inside-out living should be permanent. The owners have a Cuban art collection that is well chosen. Contemplation of the whimsical pieces is part of daily enjoyment. The furnishings are plush with a casual elegance. It is obvious the owner has an eye for very interesting objects which enhance each room. The staff makes sure we stay tidy, and they are charming.
It is hard to leave the grand oasis but we often take a pre-cocktail walk on the golf course walking paths, or indulge in a rum punch at the resort beach below. We adore our meals (gourmet grocery around corner) on the big veranda poolside. Though dining in Christiansted is certainly five star, and it’s always fun to mix with the enthusiastic locals.
St.Croix is an island that still has a bit of the Caribbean exoticism left. We have visited many isles in the area which have become over- developed. This island, our yearly retreat, welcomes us with artful surroundings and the most deluxe comfort we could ever desire. Perhaps we should keep it a secret!
